Born in 1956 in Postiyne, Ukraine, Zabeida studied at the Lviv College of Applied Arts from 1971 to 1975 and the National Academy of Arts from 1977 to 1982. In 1991, he immigrated to Canada, where he currently resides.
Upon settling in Montreal, Zabeida delved into printmaking, painting, and drawing. His passion for exploring innovative approaches to environmentally sustainable printmaking blossomed during his tenure at Atelier Circulaire (1995-2004) and as a printmaking instructor at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario (2003-2004). Concurrently, he actively showcased his creations in numerous exhibitions across North America and abroad. Notable among these exhibitions are his solo presentation “Espaces simultanés” at the Centre de créativité du Gesu, Montreal, in 1999, and his participation in the travelling exhibition “Canada Prints: Now,” curated by Walter Jule, who journeyed to China in 2002-2003.
Throughout his career, Zabeida has garnered recognition through various awards and grants, including the prestigious 2003 Pollock-Krasner Award in New York, NY, USA, and the First Prize at the 8th Create Canadian Competition in 2002, organized by Canadian Art magazine and Ernst & Young Canada, Toronto, Ontario.
From 2002 until the gallery's closure in 2016, Zabeida was represented by the Edward Day Gallery in Toronto. Presently, he navigates his artistic journey as a self-represented artist.
Zabeida's artistic legacy extends beyond the confines of galleries, as his works adorn several prominent public collections worldwide. He devotes his creative energy to his Montreal studio, where he embarks on a series of large-scale 2D and sculptural works. These creations reflect his vision, addressing contemporary issues and the manifold challenges encountered at both personal and global levels.
